Red Dog Blues is al weer het zevende album van singer-songwriter Michael Fracasso uit Austin, Texas. Als kind van Italiaanse immigranten groeide hij op in Ohio alwaar hij milieuwetenschap studeerde. Echter toen hij zijn studie had afgerond trok hij meteen naar New York om daar in het beroemde Greenwich Village een carrière als singer-songwriter te beginnen. Naar enige jaren en veranderingen in de muziek-scene besloot hij te verhuizen naar het muziekmekka Austin, Texas alwaar hij sinds 1990 zijn vaste woon en verblijfplaats heeft. Red Dog Blues is een zeer fraai album vol zeer kundig gepende liedjes, iets waar Fracasso bij de kenners om bekend staat. Hij weet uit de meest ongewone situaties en flarden van verhalen die voorbij vliegen inspiratie te vinden. Zoals een gesprekje dat hij opving tussen twee nogal conservatieve dames die met lede ogen de veranderingen in de buurt aanzien (lees: komst van Mexicanen) tovert hij om in een ‘tongue-in cheek’ liedje genaamd “There Goes The Neighborhood”. De dood van zijn hond die uit zijn lijden werd verlost resulteerde in het cynische Red Dog Blues, dat diverse andere creaturen aankaart die beter uit hun lijden verlost zouden kunnen worden. Zijn collega’s in eigen land omschrijven hem als “The guy that has a mighty fine way with words”. Dat blijkt ook wel uit de vele spitsvondige zinsneden in zijn liedjes. In het tikkeltje Dylaneske Texas Lost Highway klinkt hij als als een volledig geassimileerde import Texaan. Het ruim zeven minuten durende Red, White & Blue is een prachtig gevoelig anti-oorlogs epistel dat het verhaal verteld van een soldaat die terug kwam en niet alleen zijn been verloor in de oorlog. Michael Fracasso’s stem heeft een hele bijzondere klankkleur, een heldere hoge tenor, die bij vlagen doet denken aan Orbison, Buddy Holly of Gene Pitney. Dat is voor sommige misschien eerst even wennen maar uiteindelijk is die stem echt prachtig. Zijn stijl van schrijven zou je het beste nog kunnen omschrijven als een kruising tussen Ron Sexsmith en Randy Newman. J! e kunt g erust stellen dat Fracasso meestersongschrijversschap bezit die iedereen zou moeten horen en wij verwachten dat hij het komende jaar nu toch echt eens gaat doorbreken bij een groter publiek. In ieder geval is Red Dog Blues naar ons idee een essentiële plaat voor de donkere dagen. Te nuttigen terwijl je jezelf lekker genesteld hebt in de bank met kaarslicht en een goed glas wijn. Daarom dus van harte aanbevolen als cd van de maand december.
Bio
I grew up in the steel-mill town of Mingo Junction, Ohio. My parents were Italian Immigrants and my Dad worked in the mill. I learned about music through listening to a.m. radio and the times we went to the Country Music Jamboree in Wheeling, W.Va., near my home on The Ohio River. The first concert I saw was Kitty Wells, I never knew what a “honky-tonk angel” was but I loved her voice. My parents grew large vegetable gardens and an orchard, and made their own wine. As a kid, it was a place for idle summers and sandlot baseball, but as I grew older, it became a place to leave.
I worked summers in the steel mill and went away to college, first to Ohio State University in Columbus, and then to Washington State University in Pullman. I got a degree in Environmental Science but I knew I always wanted to be a musician so I left the forests behind me and moved to New York City.
Upon my arrival in New York, the first place I headed to was the Cornelia Street Cafe. Every Monday night in this Greenwich Village Cafe a songwriter exchange was held where you could only perform a new song. In the audience and on stage were some of New York's best songwriters of the new folk scene: Suzanne Vega, The Roches, Mark Johnson, Steve Forbert, etc. To get up in that small cafe was intimidating, but the exhilaration of playing is what kept me going.
It was during this time that I published my first song, “Big Sister” that went to #11 on the Canadian charts and recorded a song for The Cornelia Street Songwriters Exchange album. Eventually the scene changed and I felt like I needed a to make a move.
In 1990 I came to Austin, Texas with everything that would fit in the back of my Volkswagen Rabbit, which was mostly my guitars. While in New York, a reviewer in Variety once described my songs as having a "rustic sound with a city sensibility," and in Austin, I found my equivalent.
It is a town steeped in musical heritage and the people who live here (read: Native Texans) are proud of this. Here, with the help of a lot of talented musicians and friends, I was able to record my first album, Love & Trust (1993 DejaDisc) and organized my first national tour with Jimmy Lafave, David Halley, and Jo Carroll Pierce. I recorded When I lived in the Wild (1995 BohemiaBeat) and the album was a critical success and followed it up with World in a Drop of Water (1998 BohemiaBeat) and Back to Oklahoma (2001 India Records) both produced by Charlie Sexton. Also with the help of Charlie Sexton I wrote and recorded most of the music for the movie Monster Hunter. Around 2002 I started doing gigs around town with Patty Griffin as my backup singer. She’s featured on my next album Pocketful of Rain (2004 Texas Music Group) and has had me as her tour opener, most recently the Spring of 2006.
My musical travels have taken me to many exotic and some not so exotic locals (read: sofas) and I’ve appeared on several national syndicated radio shows including World Café, Mountain Stage and Acoustic Café. I feel blessed to have this job and with the support of my fans, I hope to continue.
Red Dog Blues
Announcing the release of Michael Fracasso's new album, Red Dog Blues (Little Fuji Records). Fracasso's exploration of love and life takes him from the back of the "personals" section as explored in his last critically acclaimed album, Pocketful of Rain (2004) to a CD that reads like the pages of a southern gothic.
The centerpiece of this is "Red White & Blue" a haunting story of war that follows a soldier through the pangs of battle which leave him broken and loveless and draped in his nation's colors. "Hurricane" written before Katrina and Rita is a prescient piece of writing but could serve as a script for any disaster. Like a modern day Mark Twain, Fracasso approaches divisive topics with tongue and cheek; "There Goes the Neighborhood" offers a decidedly un-politically correct viewpoint on his neighbors that could be expanded to the relations in the Middle East or any other hot spot. The title song "Red Dog Blues" takes a stab at the right to die controversy and gives it a Buddhist twist and "Texas Lost Highway" pokes fun at the trend of beer-popping, gun-toting, Cadillac driving songs that are so popular in his home state. When he's not on the road Fracasso is a stay-at-home dad and is as supremely confident in the kitchen as he is on stage (he teaches cooking classes). Heartfelt tunes including "Naked Fool", "Stone's Throw" and "That is Life" round off the album and take the mundane artifacts of the daily grind and hold them up in a glorious light.
For his new project Fracasso wrote and performed a considerable number of the songs on piano as well as using his vintage acoustic guitars. He employs the horn section and producer/guitarist David Hamburger from the band, Beaumont LaGrange plus the talented rhythm section of JJ Johnson (Charlie Sexton Band) on drums and Byron Isaacs (Ollabelle) on bass. Together, these musicians have created an album brimming with atmosphere of the American South.
